The marketers do it to study your browsing habits for marketing research and target specific ads just for you. Some sites get paid per ad click, so they steer you on their affiliate websites. There is money in advertising.

Seeing as how some advertisers now are so manipulative, aggressive and out of control at using you for ad viewing, there has been software designed to counter their measures. Not Anti-virus.. ANTI-SPYWARE.

Microsoft has joined in spyware removal to defend its own Windows products.

Install Windows XP Service Pack 2

Windows Service Pack 2 includes all fixes and updates since the release in October 2001. It is mainly focused on security of your XP PC.

This update adds an Internet Explorer pop-up blocker, warnings for web installations that sneak in software, Outlook Express spam privacy features among other things.

Internet Explorer Security Zones

Microsoft Internet Explorer is the most popular web browser. Most webpages are coded specifically for IE. If you use IE 5 or higher, you can keep known spy/ad sites from giving you file downloads.

By running this reg file, it will add hundreds of known offenders to your IE's Restricted Internet Zone. In turn, the webpage can not give you any files or malicious scripts to prompt installs.

After you add these settings, you may get messages that say "Active X can not be run on this page" or "Your Security Settings Do Not Allow.." , it means you are on or trying to connect to one of the known spyware/adware sites.

Cookies are small files given to you by the web pages you visit. They are both good and bad. Good ones tell a shop site the items in your shopping basket, or what city you are in for movie listings. Bad ones can track what you have clicked on and which ads you have seen to give you more ads.

By running this registry file, it will add the 20 Largest Cookie Companies that are affiliated with sites all over the internet. After, you add these sites, your computer will simply reject the cookie and they can not track your web browsing preferences.

Download it here. Simply double click it, say yes then say ok. To alter these sites or add and remove them.. within Internet Explorer.. Tools > Internet Options > Privacy tab > click Edit button

Use Firefox as your Web Browser and avoid half of these measures

95% of people use Internet Explorer to surf the web because it comes with Windows. Hackers and advertisers use that statistic as the reason to code all their malicious spyware installer code and virus code is just for Internet Explorer. But, there is more than one way to surf the internet..
